Communications Director (Volunteer)

Position Title: Communications Manager  

Location: Remote  

Reports to: Executive Director  

Volunteer, 2-year commitment requested (expected 5 hours per week or less)

 

 

About Us:

 

Lightning Ink Press Co. is a newly founded 501(c)3 nonprofit literary press dedicated to sharing stories that have something to say. We are a volunteer-run operation that exists to dismantle the traditional gates keeping crucial voices out of the publishing industry, centering works that challenge traditional narratives and maintaining a dynamic that pays authors what they are worth.

 

We are looking for a dynamic, creative, and passionate individual to help amplify our presence and reach on digital platforms. 

 

Position Summary:

The Communications Manager will assist us in developing and executing comprehensive communication strategies that promote the mission, values, and programs of Lightning Ink Press Co., increase awareness of our press, promote our authors and their works, and engage with our growing community of readers, writers, and literary enthusiasts.

 

This position will oversee external communications, content creation, and social media efforts. The ideal candidate is a creative, strategic thinker with excellent writing and organizational skills, a passion for literature, and the ability to engage a broad range of audiences. Previous experience not required — an excellent opportunity to grow your skill set while contributing to a great cause. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

*Please note this is a broad overview of our needs that will be supported by interns and other (unpaid) staff. 

 

Content Creation & Strategy:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy to promote the press’s publications, events, and initiatives.

  • Write, edit, and produce content for newsletters, press releases, website updates, social media, and other communication channels.

  • Work closely with the editorial team to ensure alignment of messaging for new book releases, author features, and literary news.

  • Foster a strong online community by responding to comments, messages, and engaging in conversations across social media platforms. Build relationships with authors, readers, and literary influencers.

Social Media Management:

  • Oversee the press’s social media accounts by creating and scheduling engaging content that connects with readers, authors, and the literary community.

  • Develop social media campaigns to promote launches, fundraising efforts, and special events.

Brand Management:

  • Ensure consistent and compelling messaging that reflects the press’s mission, vision, and values across all communication channels.

  • Oversee the development of marketing materials, including brochures, posters, event invitations, and other print and digital collateral.

  • Maintain and evolve the press’s visual and editorial brand identity.

Stakeholder Engagement (in collaboration with fundraising coordinator):

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including authors, donors, literary organizations, and community partners.

  • Draft and send communications that recognize and engage donors, supporters, and volunteers.

Monitoring & Reporting:

  • Track and report on communication metrics to assess the effectiveness of campaigns, media outreach, and social media strategies.

  • Provide regular updates on communication activities to the leadership team, and offer recommendations for improvement.

Media Relations:

  • Build and maintain relationships with journalists, bloggers, and media outlets to increase visibility for the press’s work and its authors.

  • Write and distribute press materials, including press releases, media kits, and pitches, to secure coverage in literary and general media outlets.

  • Monitor media coverage and track the effectiveness of media outreach.

Desired Skills:

  • Detail oriented

  • Creative Mindset: Able to think creatively and strategically about how to engage an audience and tell compelling stories about the press’s authors and books.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create compelling content for various platforms and audiences.

  • Strong knowledge of social media platforms.

  • Proficient with (or able to learn) social media management and analytics tools 

  • Ability to create visually appealing content using design tool Canva

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
